Don’s NYC Diary: A 9-Day Journey Through the Five Boroughs

Hello from the Big Apple! Don here, and I’m excited to share a recap of the incredible tour Orient Tours hosted in March 2025. This wasn’t just a trip; it was a personal deep dive into the heart and soul of New York City, mixing the classic must-sees with the authentic, local experiences that only a true NYC friend can provide.

We packed nine days with culture, history, art, and—most importantly—fantastic food, proving that the best way to see New York is to explore all five boroughs. Read all about it on Don’s NYC Diary below.

Part 1: Classic Manhattan & A Brooklyn Day Trip

We landed on Friday, March 14th via SK903, and after a relaxing first evening at home with the family, we hit the ground running.

  • Classic Icons (Saturday): We started Saturday with the sensory overload of Times Square, followed by breathtaking panoramic views from Top of the Rock. The afternoon was spent in the urban oasis of Central Park, soaking up the tranquility at Bethesda Fountain before heading to the legendary lights of a Broadway show. Nothing beats that first day in Manhattan!
  • Crossing the Bridge (Sunday): Sunday was dedicated to the trendy vibe of Brooklyn. We began with an exhilarating walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, rewarding us with stunning skyline views. We explored the industrial chic of DUMBO, grabbed lunch at Time Out Market, and finished the day enjoying the lively nightlife in Williamsburg, capping it off with drinks at a rooftop bar like Westlight.

Part 2: History, Culture, and Artistic Expression

Mid-week was a deep immersion into the financial history, high art, and neighborhood charm that defines the city.

  • History and Heights (Monday): St. Patrick’s Day had us focused on freedom and finance. We ferried out to the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island in the morning. The afternoon was spent navigating the Financial District, seeing the Charging Bull, and ascending the One World Observatory. We dined in one of NYC’s oldest streets, Stone Street.
  • Museums & Elegance (Tuesday): Tuesday offered a choice of cultural giants: The American Museum of Natural History or the modern mastery of MoMA. The afternoon was spent enjoying the elegance of the Upper East Side and Fifth Avenue. For dinner, we went classic NYC: a magnificent steakhouse experience at Keens Steakhouse.
  • Elevated Paths & Bohemia (Wednesday): We experienced the unique urban renewal of The High Line, strolling along the elevated park through Chelsea to Hudson Yards. After lunch at Chelsea Market, we spent the evening embracing the artistic, musical soul of Greenwich Village, catching a set at a jazz bar like Blue Note.

Part 3: The Authentic NYC Beyond Manhattan

The true highlight of the trip was dedicating time to the diverse cultures found outside Manhattan, giving the group a complete picture of New York City.

  • Soul Food and Legends (Thursday): We journeyed north to the Bronx and Harlem. The morning gave us options like the New York Botanical Garden. We savored authentic soul food at the legendary Sylvia’s in Harlem before visiting the iconic Apollo Theater for a thrilling live music experience.
  • The Queens Perspective (Friday): Our final full day explored Queens. We started in Long Island City (LIC), capturing some of the best possible views of the Manhattan skyline from Gantry Plaza State Park. Then, we dove into the culinary heart of Flushing, NYC’s real Chinatown, indulging in the best dumplings imaginable at Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao. We closed the tour with a relaxed dinner in Astoria, known for its welcoming Greek atmosphere.

Final Thoughts

The tour concluded on Saturday, March 22nd, after a leisurely brunch and last-minute shopping. This itinerary proved that you need time and local insight to truly experience New York. From the history of Lower Manhattan to the bohemian life of the West Village and the diverse flavors of the outer boroughs, this was a comprehensive adventure.
